Posted on The National
PRIME Minister James Marape congratulated grand finalists Hela Wigmen and Lae Tigers for putting on an exciting display of rugby league at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Sports Minister Marape said the Tigers were the benchmark rugby league team in the country and they deserved to be crowned champions. The Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored outfit also won the minor premiership.
Marape also praised the Wigmen for a brave effort this season.
“Tigers, you are the benchmark team in the last three years,” he said.
“If there is any team who deserve to win today (Sunday) it is certainly the Tigers and they proved that.
“Congratulations to the Tigers.
“To the Wigmen, great men come out gracious in defeat.
“You were gracious in defeat and you are equally my champions.
“Congratulations to you, your families and sponsors, and also all the teams who had taken part in the Digicel Cup this year.”
He said the good thing about sports was that there was always the next season to look forward to for teams to work on their weaknesses and improve on their strengths.
Marape said he was looking forward to a bigger and better season next year.
He also thanked Digicel for supporting rugby league in the country over the last nine years.
Marape said he was looking forward to their continued support in the years to come.
